Description

Mercator Ocean International has been developing operational oceanography activities for nearly 30 years, as part of its public interest mission to preserve the ocean.

Many scientific and societal challenges must be met to ensure a sustainable ocean, whether they concern the environment, biodiversity, climate change, the blue economy or education. To meet these challenges, Mercator Ocean designs, develops, operates and maintains state-of-the-art digital systems capable of describing, analysing and forecasting the state of the ocean in 3D, continuously and in real time. The scientific information is then translated to be accessible to all, whether they are public or commercial services, political decision makers, industrialists, associations, NGOs, teachers or citizens. Mercator Ocean International thus combines scientific excellence and social commitment on a daily basis.

As a non-profit company under multinational governance (ES, FR, GB, IT, NO), we work in a climate of trust with our ten shareholder partners, all key players in the development of European oceanography.

Responsibilities

About the project:

As part of the development of the European Digital Twin Ocean (EDITO), the intern will help to keep track of the catalogue of scientific applications, models and tools available on the platform.

The main tasks will be to:

• monitor applications, models and workflows that are available or currently being integrated into EDITO;

• document and classify these resources according to their functionalities, scientific field, data used, deployment methods and potential for reuse;

• analyse the available content to meet the needs of stakeholders;

• test certain applications and models to understand how they work, their input/output data and conditions of use;

• help to prototype the certification process for applications and models integrated into EDITO by identifying validation criteria, e.g. proper functioning, reproducibility, documentation, quality of results, ease of use and interoperability;

• help formalise a workflow and recommendations to facilitate the cataloguing and reuse of resources.

The placement lies at the interface between marine sciences, data and digital tools, in collaboration with scientific, technical, and stakeholders’ engagement teams.

Profile

Skills to succeed:

We are looking for candidates who are meticulous, organised, possess strong analytical and synthesis skills, and are highly motivated to develop their careers in a scientific and technical environment focused on oceanography.

The placement is aimed at Master 2 students in oceanography, marine sciences, environmental studies, geosciences, data science applied to the environment or a related field, with a keen interest in digital tools, models, scientific applications and environmental data.

A good level of English is required. Knowledge of Git, Docker, NetCDF/xarray or geospatial data processing would be an advantage, though is not essential.
